The Future of Building

Sustainability and Environmental Justice

Sustainability and Environmental Justice

Ecological economist Herman Daly asked the question, “What use is a sawmill without a forest?”

We have designed a building system that removes carbon dioxide from the air while the biological plant fiber grows and we use the natural insulating hurd material from the industrial hemp plant to build a healthy, warm, low energy shelter for your home that will last for several generations. The hemp lime blocks use a binder that reclaims CO2 released in its production. These combined materials have a negative CO2 emission rating. We firmly believe in environmental justice by using sustainable materials to replace currently unsustainable building materials and practices.

Sustainable development consists of balancing local and global efforts to meet basic human needs without destroying the natural environment. Environmental justice is as important as is sustainable development. From this perspective, the economy is a subsystem of human society, which is itself a subsystem of the biosphere, and a gain in one sector is a loss from another.

The Earth Charter speaks of “a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature, universal human rights, economic justice, and a culture of peace.”

Sustainability implies responsible and proactive decision-making and innovation that minimizes negative impact and maintains balance between ecological resilience, economic prosperity, political justice and cultural vibrancy to ensure a desirable planet for all species now and in the future.

We at Just BioFiber believe that everyone must do something to contribute to the sustainability of our environment. Lets all do at least one positive act and measure our contribution one person at a time. We do ours one block at a time and so can you by choosing to build with sustainable materials.
